What is land pollution?

It is when pollutants go onto the land and make it dirty. This happens because of:

  • Humans storing their waste on land.

  • Waste being washed ashore from boats and sewage outlets.

How do people usually get rid of their waste?

By placing it in landfills.

Are landfills a good way of getting rid of waste?

No, they aren't. This is because:

  • Landfills are dusty and smelly

  • They create things that are harmful to the environment, because of the way different types of waste can combine inside them.

  • Landfills are not really useful once they are full.

  • They can produce gases that will pollute nearby waterways, air and soil.

  • They produce methane, a greenhouse gas which can cause fires.

What can you do to help?

Remember the three R’s, so that we can create less waste.

  • Reduce, by thinking carefully about the things you buy and use.

  • Re-use whatever you can before throwing it away.

  • Recycle whatever you can rather than throwing it in the garbage to go to a landfill.

Remember…

If you get rid of your waste with care, your surroundings will be cleaner.
