What is noise pollution?

Noise pollution is unwanted sound that is usually created by something humans are doing. It may be a loud noise or it may be a quieter noise that goes on a long time.

Where does noise pollution come from?

  • Trucks.

  • Cars.

  • Trains.

  • Aeroplanes.

  • Factories.

  • Houses being built.

  • Dogs and other animals.

Why does noise pollution matter?

Noise levels are getting higher, and this is a problem because:

  • Animals that live in or near areas that have noise pollution become distressed.

  • Animals that live in or near areas that have noise pollution may have to find new homes.

  • It can make our heart beat too fast.

  • It can affect our sleep and cause us to become tired, grumpy, nervous and stressed.

  • It can damage our hearing and even make us deaf.

What can the government do to reduce noise pollution?

  • Create stricter laws about noise pollution.

  • Make it illegal for people to have broken car and home burglar alarms that are too loud or that won't turn off.

  • Research ways of making our roads quieter.

  • Improve the design of engines and other machines so that they make less noise.

  • What can you do to help?

    • Watch the volume of your TV or stereo.

    • Close windows or doors in your house when there is a loud noise being made.

    • Tell one of your parents if you hear a loud noise coming from the car so that they can fix the problem.

    Remember…

Don’t be a noise polluter: be considerate of others.
